It is with deep sadness that the family of Mary Basha (nee Moore) announces her passing in St. John’s, NL, on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at the age of 90 years at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. She succumbed to complications following surgery after falling and breaking her hip six weeks ago.
Mary will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her sons, Michael, Tom (Jacqui), Richard and daughter Joanne; her grandchildren, Arielle, Robin, Ben, James, Jorja, Marvin, Shae, Ally, and Andrew; sister Paula; sister-in-law Joan and nieces Paula and Jennifer. She was predeceased by her husband Mike (2003) and grandson Ben (2019).
Mary was born in St. John’s and grew up on Merry Meeting Road. She had a sense of adventure and first left home at age 20 to work as a teletype operator travelling across Newfoundland to many out of the way places. She then left Newfoundland to pursue an opportunity as a flight attendant in the USA during the 1950s. She eventually made her way back to NL, settling in Corner Brook where she raised a family with her husband Mike Basha. She moved back to St. John’s in 2005. Mary had many friends, an active social life, and was an avid bridge player.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the caring and compassionate nurses, doctors and support staff on the 6th floor West wing at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. Thanks also to the Residence at Littledale, where Mary had moved in August, for making her stay there, while short, very welcoming.
Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Wednesday, November 23 from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. A memorial service will take place on Thursday November 24, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. The service will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend. The link will be available on Mary’s obituary page at www.carnells.com.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Epilepsy NL.
