It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mary Constance (Royle) Thompson who died peacefully at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence on March 1st. Born in St. John’s in 1936, Mary grew up in a loving family with parents George and Bridget and her three adoring brothers John, Bob, and Pat who have remained so close all these years.
If there was a match made in heaven, it came to life when Mary met and later married the love of her life, Douglas Thompson in 1958, who together would go on to raise five children in a happy home on Linden Place. Those hectic days offer so many precious memories largely as a result of Mary’s devotion to family, including her genuine qualities to heal, comfort, encourage, and laugh. Time with family was always her priority, which often included her “extended” family made up of her children’s friends; regulars at Linden Place, who were always made to feel at home. Mary and Doug also cherished their own many great friendships over the years, all of whom filled our house with stories and laughter on countless occasions. Included is the Friday night card games with the Collins and Powers which went on for over 40 years without hardly missing a beat. Also are fond memories of fun and laughter with decades old friends the O’Gradys, Waddens and so many others through the years.
Later in life as her children moved out (and some away) Mary’s insuperable bond with us all made it impossible to move too far from the nest or leave it for very long. She was the glue to keep us all tightly connected. This was the start of frequent visits and the annual Thompson reunion which brought the clan together for memories that can never be forgotten. That bond only strengthened with the arrival of Mary’s grandchildren who she loved dearly and loved being around.
Mary had a truly special way about her which made everyone around her feel comforted and better about themselves. Her grandchildren would constantly remark about the way she greeted those she came into contact with….it was always “my darling”, “my love” or “God love ya”. She had such a gentle soul and was always worried more about other people than herself. Her great outlook on life and constant smile was infectious to all of us.
So “God love ya”, Mary Thompson ….(and we know he does), as you have left behind a legacy of love, family, and kindness that will be remembered always.
Mary is predeceased by husband Douglas (2017) and leaves to mourn children Anne (John), Michael (Susan), Douglas (Li), Danny (Bernie), and John (Sandy) along with grandchildren Katie, Sarah, Jonathan, Jack, Christopher, Laura, Patrick, Daniel, William and her brothers John (Marjory, dec.), Bob (Diane) and Pat (Therese). Mary will also be dearly missed by her many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
She is resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home for on-line visitation only. A celebration of her life for all the goodness Mary brought to the world will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please buy a bouquet for yourself or a loved one and think of our Mom who would so like you to enjoy their beauty. Or simply cherish those around you with kindness and compassion as our Mother always did.
The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation for the incredible caregivers at Kenny’s Pond who have cared for Mom like family over the past several years.
My family sends our deepest sympathies to your family for the passing of your Dear Mom, Mrs. Thompson..

To the Thompson family.
Sincere sympathy is extended to you all. Your dear mother embraced every moment she spent on earth. That was evident to all who had the pleasure of having known her. That infectious smile of hers! It lit up every room she entered. We have many fond memories of having attended your yearly family get togethers over the years. The delicious meals, laughter, and the odd glass of wine is forever etched in our memories. Doug & Mary made the trek to Corner Brook many times to visit family and we looked forward to seeing them. Just being in their company made us feel special. A beautiful rose has been plucked from earths garden and now flourishes in Heaven. Rest easy Mary. Tho your life on earth has ended, you are reunited with your loved ones. No doubt there was many loving arms to hold her as she entered her place of eternal rest.. Your hearts are broken for sure. Cherish the legacy your parents left behind.
Sincerely, Rick & Madonna O’Brien.

I am going to miss her voice as she was alway singing or humming a tune. She was always by my side and with her gentle touch, big smile and her giggle I knew that we were ready to get into mischief. She touched so many peoples hearts during her time at Kenny’s Pond and she will be forever in my heart.

My sincere sympathy to Mary’s family. I met Mary at Kenny’s Pond many years ago. As a volunteer with Mary Queen of Peace, my visits include a Prayer Service and Holy Communion. Mary was one of the regulars and here faith was very important to her. She always sat in front and her smile was just beautiful! One day, she asked if I could wait for her as she wanted to get her nails done. It was so funny and we had a chuckle over that. Of course, I did a second service for her. I will miss Mary very much when restrictions are lifted.
Rest in Peace. Sue
My deepest sympathy to all the Thompson family. Mary was a wonderful woman and mother and I’m sure that, after this sad time, you will find comfort in all the happy memories of her. Rest In Peace Mary. Sincerely

Anne, Mike, Dougie, Danny, and John,
Sorry to hear about your Mom’s passing the other day. Mrs. Thompson was the most pleasant lady that came to visit us on Larch Place over the years with Mr. Thompson. She always had a smile on her face and a little mischievous twinkle in her eye.
I vividly remember the regular visits of the Thompson’s to our house and the infectious laughter coming from your Mom as she really enjoyed a good laugh and the razzing amongst family members. Mary and Doug, but especially Mary, would enjoy my impersonation of my mother during a evening of revelry and then the next morning. I know Mrs. Thompson would enjoy me coming into the living room to say hello because she knew I was going to go into my Louise O’Grady act!
Mrs. Thompson was a class act all the way. I loved being in her presence because she was always so positive and full of life. She truly enjoyed having a laugh with people and yes she often said “God love ya!”
Her celebration of life will be a great one because that would be the way that Mary would want it!
God Bless you Mrs. Thompson! You are with Mr. Thompson now who loved you so much.

So much carefree laughter! The tribute is so beautiful and describes her so well. My Father (Pat) loved their regular visits together over all these years (especially at lunchtime). Aunt Mary is so close in our heart. We are thinking of you so much. Love Mary-Clare, Gilles, Solange and Juliette
To Anne, Michael , Doug, Danny and John my deepest and profound sympathies. Your mom was an incredible and wonderful individual who did a amazing job of raising five marvlous children. You were all so blessed to have such caring, reliable and tenderhearted Mom. With love and kindness she instilled in her children the magnificient qualities that she displayd towards everyone. Her door was always open and a smile was always displayed on her face. As a Celtic Basketball player I had the opportunity to walk under the arches of her doorway., and like all others who did the same, we were treated as if we were her own. Please know that I am in your thoughts and prayers.
So sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. God bless.
Anne, Mike, Doug, Danny, and John, your beautiful and loving tribute for your truly wonderful Mom has stirred many memories from our 25 years in Linden Court. We loved having your family as neighbours; yours was a family we long admired. Our Mom often bumped into yours at Dominion, in the Square, and a lively chat updating each other on all the kids would ensue. She was very proud of each of you but always inquired as to where Bernadette and I were studying, working, and living.
Our heartfelt condolences go to all of you. Your Mom was a very special woman whose kind and caring ways touched so many of us. Rest In Peace, Mrs. T.
Thanks for the memories.

Mary T and my mom, Mary Fahey, were bosom buddies on the 3rd floor of Kenny’s Pond, and until recently, were darting from choir practice to movie night to happy hour, joined at the hip and never missing a beat. They loved getting “done up” by the staff who went wild with the curling irons, costume jewellery, etc. all for a bit of fun. Mary always had a kind word and a smile for my siblings and I when we visited Mom. She was a remarkable lady and will be missed.
Pat Royle,

Hope you find much peace in your beautiful family memories. God love ya.
Mary & I were friends since our High School days. We played Basketball together at Mercy – We played Tennis & Swam together – not to mention the Parties that Cliff & I attended on Linden Place & Healey’s Pond with she & Doug. She was ‘one in a million’ . Rest in Peace, my love.
Sincerely, Joan (Wadden) Hann

Although never having the privilege of knowing your mother well, from reading the beautiful obituary, it isn’t hard to tell what a wonderful woman, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend she was. All we do know from the many years of knowing the Thompson family members, and in meeting some of them for the first time at John and Sandy’s wedding, she must have been one amazing person, as she raised an amazing group of men and women, who carry on all of her amazing traits. She will be missed but you are all extremely lucky to have such wonderful memories of a wonderful woman. Our prayers and condolences go out to all of the Thompson clan. Tom, Linda, Jordyn, Jack Mercer
