Mary Dorothy LeShane (nee Lewis)

April 5, 1934 to September 8, 2023

Obituary

LESHANE Mary Dorothy (nee Lewis) age 89 years, passed peacefully surrounded by her family at the Health Science Centre, St. John’s, NL on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Predeceased by the love of her life, William; Parents, Eli & Frances; Siblings, Florence, William & Margaret; Brother-in-law, Clayton; Sisters-in-law, Olive, Florence, Marion & Daphne

Leaving to mourn with wonderful memories, daughter, Marilyn; her two darling granddaughters, Heather (Jeff) and Susan (Pat);  two great-grandchildren Hannah & Blake,; her siblings, Ralph (Marion), Judy (Don), Maureen (Harold) and Lorna; and brother-in-law Rowland.

Mary was born in St. John’s but lived most of her adult life in Lower Island Cove, which is where she met and made a home with her loving husband Bill. Over the 50+ years Mary lived in Lower Island Cove, she entertained many family and friends. From sleepover parties with her granddaughters with Pringles and Lime crush, to Sunday dinner and everything in between. If you went to visit, Miss Mary (as many affectionately knew her), you’d never get out without her wanting to fix you a lunch. If you were fortunate enough to have had her raisin tea buns or partridgeberry pies; you’d never say no.

Mary was always busy and never sat still for a minute – if she wasn’t spending time with her family, or in her kitchen, she’d be found in her sewing/craft room.

In 2020, Mary returned to St. John’s to be closer to her sisters and brother. She lived in Heritage Square and then St. Pat’s Mercy Home. Her family thank both facilities for the amazing care they gave her in her final years.

Cremation has taken place. A private burial will happen at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Pat’s Mercy Home.

So sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. Condolences to all her family.

Miss Mary lived down the street from my parents (Don & Nellie Morris) in Lower Island Cove. She was the sweetest human being with the kindest soul who was adored by all.

To all her family, I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. The world was a much better place with Mary in it.

Upon learning of the passing of my dear ‘Aunt Mary’, I find myself reflecting on the many treasured and wonderful memories I have of her. Aunt Mary (and Uncle Bill) whole-heartedly embraced me from my early childhood years during summer vacations in Lower Island Cove, and again after I took up permanent residence back in Newfoundland as a young adult. I was just a nephew , but they accepted me in their family as if ‘I was one of their very own’, and ‘in her own words’ accepted me as ‘a son they never had’. What a talented and remarkable women she was. Her concern for my well being and her mentoring was fundamental in establishing me on a solid path going forward, …of which I will be eternally grateful. The world is a lesser place today because of her passing, and the photos and videos we have of her will long be treasured by myself and my wife Luanne.
Go now ‘Aunt Mary’ to be united with (the love of your life… ) ‘Uncle Bill’.
Rest in Peace.’
Love
Your nephew , Brian

I have many treasured memories of Mary, but my last one is on my mind right now. On my last visit to NL Mary told me I must be at her home at 6:00 sharp for a plate of fish n brewis. I was chatting with a friend up on the highroad and I said I need to cut this conversation short because Mary gave me strict orders to be there at 6 pm. I was there on time and had the best meal of fish n brewis. I will relive that memory with so many others as times goes on.
