Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary “Elaine” Lonsdale (nee Hopkins) at the age of 93. She died peacefully at her home in Portugal Cove St. Philips, NL with her daughter Deborah by her side.

She was predeceased by her father Harold Hopkins, mother Maria “Marie” Hopkins (nee Taylor), husband Roy (1929-2004), son David (1960-1995), sisters Stella (Bob) Cairns, and Pat (Les) Trew, and son-in-law Peter Cannon,  She was a loving mother and friend to her four children, Deborah Cannon of Portugal Cove, NL, Dawn Lonsdale (Joe Peskunowicz) of Calgary, AB, Leslie (Wayne) Kot of Maui, HI, and David Lonsdale.  She also leaves to mourn three grandsons, Tyler Cannon of St. John’s, Daniel Cannon (Kim) of C.B.S., and Benn Cannon (Miranda) of St. John’s, NL, and four great-grandsons, Harrison, Theodore, Benson, and Blake, brother-in-law Les Trew (CA, USA), and special friends Karen Timm (Westmeath, ON), and Barbara (Lee) Bentley (Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON).

Formerly from Burlington then Huntsville, ON, Elaine was a very creative and talented artist (Arts and Letters winner, Senior Visual Art – 2013) who enjoyed pottery (which she also taught), quilting, painting and sewing.  She also enjoyed the outdoors, skiing in the wintertime, golfing (with bragging rights for two “hole-in-ones”), and spending time at her Lake Temagami cottage in the summertime, and travelling numerous times to Sanibel island, FL and Mexico.  She was a very bright and gracious lady who will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Fardy and the Palliative Care Team, especially Fatima Mansaray and the paramedics with the Community Paramedicine Program. Their help and support was greatly appreciated.

Following her wishes, cremation has taken place, and a family memorial gathering will take place at a later date.

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.”
