Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Maureen Finlay, St. Shott’s, announce her passing at the Health Sciences Centre on October 28th, 2023. Predeceased by her parents, John and Anne Molloy, sister Rosalie, nephews Karl, John, and Brad. Leaving to mourn her passing; her loving husband Walter, daughter Sherrilynn and the light of her life, granddaughter Lily Maureen; sisters Lillian, Iris (Paul); brothers Kenneth (Theresa), Basil (Marie), and brother-in-law, Shawn. She adored her nephew and nieces and loved spending time with them and their families. Some of her happiest moments were spent in the company of family.

Mom dedicated her life to teaching and loved every minute she spent with her students, and her students adored “Mrs. Finlay”. Her beautiful smile and kind, generous heart was loved by all who knew her, and she was a dear friend to so many.

Mom was one of the strongest people I know, and she continued to be strong, even after her diagnosis and right up until the end. She inspired so many while on this earth, and her strength and gratitude will continue to be an inspiration to others.

Thank you to Dr Neveu, who mom admired so much, and to our special angels, her nurses on 5 North B who took such amazing care of mom. Thank you to our family and incredible friends who have been there for mom and dad. We will be forever grateful for the help and kindness you’ve showed our family, not only at this time of sadness but also over the years. Mass to take place at St Shott’s Community Hall with a Celebration of Life to follow mass – date and time to be announced.

MASKING REQUIRED.

I had the absolute privilege of meeting Mrs Finlay recently as her roommate at the HSC. She was such a positive, lovely lady who was so proud of her husband, daughter Sherri and granddaughter Lily. She told me how much she loved her teaching career and our conversations were always so enjoyable. She told me about the wonderful life she had and felt so blessed to have shared it with so many family and friends. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Mr Walter, Sherri and family:
Sending love and sympathy across the miles in such a heartbreaking time. For all of us growing up home, Mrs Maureen was our first teacher – she introduced us to Mr Mugs story books, taught us countless hymns and insisted on kindness and sharing. She had infinite patience and care for us and her lessons and spirit will live on in our memories. Thinking of all of you,
Theresa and Lyndon

Sherri, Lily, Walter and family, Thinking about all of you at this very difficult time. Maureen was a wonderful woman who contributed so much to the fabric of our little community. As a teacher, she taught with kindness and encouraged us to always do and be our best. She inspired generations of students to strive high and to always be proud of the education we received in our little two room school. She was so proud of all our accomplishments as we moved on in our lives and loved to catch up each time there was an opportunity to get together. Maureen’s greatest source of pride and joy were her daughter Sherri and her beautiful granddaughter Lily. She was so proud of both of you. I know how great your loss is and I hope your memories of happier times will help ease your sorrow as you move forward. Rest In Peace Maureen, you will be missed and remembered by many. Home will not be the same without you there.

I remember Maureen always being so friendly and kind whether it was running into her on a weekend I spent in St. Shott’s or in a store in St. John’s she always made time to stop and say hello. Sending my deepest condolences to Sherri Lynn, Walter and family..
