Obituary

We are sad to announce the passing of our dear mother Melinda Melvina Coates (nee Hodge), age 96, on Thursday July 6th, 2023, in the presence of her family. Born on the Northern Peninsula in Savage Cove in 1927 to George and Emily Hodge, she served at the Grenfell House in St Anthony, later moving to Main Brook where she married Andrew Coates, and helped manage their general store. She was a faithful member of St Paul’s Anglican Church and the ACW.  Shortly after Andrew’s death in 1995 she moved to St John’s to live with her son Con and his wife Karen for 25 years.

She was predeceased by her husband Andrew, and her siblings Marcia, Maisie, Malcolm, Maxwell, Mattie, Marie, Marguerite and Mark. She leaves to mourn her son Con (Karen) and her daughter Cindy (John) with grandchildren Andrew C., Christopher (Susan), Brendan, Sarah (Carl), Andrew M., Katie (Silk) and great-grandchildren Holly, Toby and Haydn.  She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews, especially niece Rose Reid, who was her lifelong friend.

We would like to thank Director Tom Taylor and Nursing Director Lynn O’Toole of the Cambridge Estates, and all of their staff, who helped above and beyond anything we could have imagined, as well as Dr. Singleton for the excellent care provided to Melinda.  Also her roommate Vina Newhook who made her last year so pleasant. Dr. Singleton.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Main Brook in September.

Donations in memory may be made to St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Main Brook.

Thinking of you during this difficult time. Your Mom was such a vibrant, strong woman. I always enjoyed our chats and her stories of Main Brook when Geoff and I lived next door to you, before our move to Halifax. Cherish your memories!

I have many fond memories of Aunt Melin. I saw her nearly every day as a child, as I grew up right next to the old general store they owned and not too many steps from her house. She was always welcoming to me and was ever so kind when Mom left. Such a lovely and vibrant lady. Condolences to all of the Coates and Hodge families as you mourn her passing. I hope to be able to attend her celebration of life in September.

We are so sorry to hear of Aunt Melinda’s passing. She is having a time now with a lot of teasing from dad and uncle Fred.
