Obituary

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed peacefully away at home surrounded by family and friends.

Predeceased by Willie Ryan (son), Monica Ryan (granddaughter), Bill Ryan (father), Mary Ryan (mother), Mary Ryan (sister), Michelle Ryan (sister in-law), Phyllis Wickham (sister in-law), and Richard Ryan (nephew).

Leaving behind to mourn with fond and loving memories, his devoted wife of 49 years, Sheila Ryan; Children:  Son Michael Ryan (Rio), Daughters: Denise Ryan, Stacey Ryan-Chipman (Kevin); Grandchildren: David, Abigail, Savanna, Chantel, Patrick, Sheldon, Alicia and Riona; great Grandchildren: Khloe, Azura, Grace, and Beau; Brothers: Leo “Dick” Ryan (Lynn), Bill Ryan (Leah), Jerry Ryan (Debbie), Tony Ryan, Tommy Ryan (Sandy); Sisters Helen Ryan, Rose Ann Dunphy (Gerry), and Doris Ryan; Step-mother Phyllis Ryan, In-laws: Tom Snow, Ronnie Snow, Ernie Snow (Janice), Tony Snow, Brian Snow (Elisha), Alice Stringer, Hilda Daigle, Frances Banfield (Jim); Special friends:  Danny and Paula Fitzgerald, Mike Dooling, Doug Kennedy, Gussie Cahill and all the Cahill family, and Cavell Snow; a circle of nieces and nephews as well as other family and friends.

A special thank you to Monsignor Kennedy, Sister Margaret, Sister Rosemary, Dr. Melissa Angel, Dr. Sohaib Al-Assaed, Dr. Edwards, nursing staff Nicole (RN), Audrey (RN) and to the staff at the Murphy Cancer Clinic.

A veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy), Mike worked in the mines out in Alberta and later at Canada Cement (Lafarge) where he received his journeyman as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Mike moved back to Newfoundland where he worked for City of St. John’s for 22 years. He was a great friend and co-worker and would put the needs of others above his own. He has advocated for others and loved to volunteer within the community. He was a charmer and good listener. He always had a way of making you smile and brightening your day, even on the gloomiest of days. Always a social butterfly, he could walk in a room and strike up a conversation with a perfect stranger and talk to them as if he had known them all his life. Always a hard worker, morals he got from his parents. He devoted his life to ensure that he provided the best for his family. A devoted husband, nurturing father and grandfather, loving brother, great friend, understanding co-worker, kind hearted stranger.  Mike dedicated his life to being the best person he could be and has touched the lives of all those in his life. He will be dearly missed!

A service will be held at St. Patrick Church October 14, 2023, in Witless Bay at 10:00 am with interment to follow at Salvation Army Cemetery, Blackmarsh Rd. St. John’s. There will be a celebration of life at 69 Harbour Road, Witless Bay at 1 p.m. following the committal.

Deepest condolences to Mike’s family. I worked with Mike at the City for many years. He was a wealth of knowledge and a joy to work with and be around. He could always take or give a joke and above all, was a great friend. I’m proud to say that he was my friend..He will be missed..

To the Ryan family. So sad to hear of Mike’s passing. I have fond memories of Mike during his time with Terra Nova Sea Cadets. You are all in my thoughts and prayers during this sad and difficult time. RIP Mike.

My sincere condolences to all his family.. Mike was a real sweetheart. The last time I spoke with him, he said to drop by anytime. We were up that way recently and I thought of popping by but couldn’t remember which house.. May your happy memories help you get through this difficult time.
