Norma Marie Steele

March 3, 1960 to October 23, 2023

Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Norma Marie Steele on Sunday, October 23rd following a 4 year struggle with frontal-temporal lobe dementia. She passed with loved ones at her side at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital at age 63.

Predeceased by her parents Brett and Elizabeth Wheaton, Norma leaves behind her husband of 40 years (Lane); two daughters Natalie (Ian) and Laurie (Cory); siblings Brian (Marina), Jeff (Marie), Shirley, Keith (Tammy), Curtis, Perry (Cathy), and Ted; sisters-in-law Sonia (Rex); Anne (Louise); Carolyn (Chris); grand-dogs Wagner and Seger; and a large circle of her dearest friends and extended family.

Born March 3rd, 1960 in Frederickton, NL Norma was raised with true Newfoundland values. Although she grew up with 6 brothers, it did not make her “rough” in any way. She was empathetic, kind and caring to anyone who needed it. She met her husband, Lane, while still in high school and loved him dearly from that moment on. At age 20 Norma moved to St. John’s, eventually settling in Paradise where she built a life with her husband Lane and raised her two daughters. She worked in accounting for over 20 years with the Fish Harvesters Resource Centre of the FFAW, where she excelled at her job and made many friends over the years. She retired at age 57 and made the most of every minute of her healthy retirement years with time spent travelling, staying at the camper, and going out with friends. Norma was a vibrant, active woman; she loved to go for long walks with friends, treks in the woods with her husband, and hikes with her daughters. She cherished her family and friends, and was always there to provide support when needed. She loved music and could be caught dancing in the kitchen on any given day. She was a ray of sunshine in her loved ones lives and the anchor that held her children and many others through the storms of life.

Our family would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the staff at Agnes Pratt nursing home for making her feel at home and loved; St Clare’s ER nurses, Dr. Power and her residents for their kindness and understanding; and the nursing staff at 6West for doing everything to make her comfortable in her final hours.

Visitation will take place at 1-3 pm on Saturday, October 28th at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, with a service to follow at 3pm at the Carnell Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of my wonderful and beautiful friend, Norma. Our friendship spanned over 40 years from our late teens to now. You were that one special friend someone would meet only once in a lifetime.

We laughed, we cried, we shared victories and we shared challenges. Mostly, we shared respect and love. Thank you Norma for all of this and I would not hesitate to go down this same path with you again if I could do it all over.

You may not have realized the impact you had on my life which continues today and always. It was you who brought two of your friends, myself and my then, future husband together some 39+ years ago.. For that, you will always be a special part of our lives.

Norma, I will miss our chats and the times we spent together. You always spoke proudly and lovingly of your family. You loved your sweetheart, Lane. You cherished your beautiful daughters, Nathalie & Laurie. You always beamed when talking about their artistic and musical talents and their love for animals.

Norma, you will be truly missed and never forgotten.

I love you dearly, my best friend forever.

Bernadette”

With love and sincere condolences from Bernadette & Terry Sansford & Family
