In Loving Memory of Patrick Martin Dempsey

Patrick Martin Dempsey, born on September 10, 1950, peacefully passed away on the morning of January 23, with his family by his side. He is now reunited with those who preceded him in death, including his youngest son, David Dempsey, his loving wife, Elizabeth (Bassett) Dempsey, his youngest brother John Dempsey, and his mother and father Sarah and Patrick Dempsey.

Left to mourn in his departure his loving son Patrick Dempsey, daughter-in-law Jenny Hawley, along with his cherished grandchildren, Áine Dempsey (Patrick & Jenny), Finley Blackmore (Rebecca), and Joshua Lilly (Suzanne). His grandchildren were the light of his life, and “Poppy Pat” was the light of theirs. He will be deeply missed.

Pat is also survived by his siblings Erin (Gail) Dempsey, Carmel (Robert) Strong, Geraldine (Roger) Barbour, Mary (Max) Hayes, Noel (Glenys) Dempsey, and Sarah Dempsey. As well as his wife’s siblings Mary Lou Hall, Dot (Craig) MacLaughlan, Cathy (Ian) Steer, and Jane Bassett. And a whole slew of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Life-long friends Pat McGrath, Garry Duff, Jackie StCroix, and Lyndon Vallis, mourn the loss of a dear friend.

Pat always placed his friends and family first, but they were closely followed by his passion for sports. Growing up in Rabbit Town, his youth filled with the love of sports. Best known by his teammates as “Dipper Dempsey” goalie for Brother Rice and later the St. John’s Caps.  Responding best when he was under pressure, Pat was known as a “money goalie” during his career in the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League, during which he won an incredible five Herder Memorial Trophy championships.

Best known for his larger-than-life personality, love of sports, and the ability to bring laughter to any room, Pat will be remembered for the joy he brought to the lives of those around him and his big kind heart (often hidden behind his humor and sarcasm).

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Funeral Mass will be held from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Saturday, January 27 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to SADS, or a charity or organization of your choice in Pat’s memory https://www.arvcfamilysupport.org/

May he rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy of a showboating game loving talented teammate, a larger-than-life personality, a sense of humor that only he could carry, and the big heart he had for those he held close.

Patrick and Dempsey Family. Sincere condolences on the passing of Pat.. Great goalie Pat left a lasting impression on all who enjoyed the Brother Rice hockey games.
Thank- you for the wonderful memories.

Pat will be missed by all who knew him. He had a larger than life personality and his humour would make one think sometimes! Him and Bib are together now as they were in life. Both of them would have been proud of Patrick’s eulogy. So glad I could watch the service from my home around the bay – on that note – Pat always called me the “bayman” in person or when I phoned for Bib. Anyone who knew Pat will remember him fondly. Rest in Peace my friend.

At the end of Pat’s funeral mass I watched Pat Jr.. delver some deeply personal and heartwarming remarks about his father. His warmth and sincerity were those of a loving son who has grown into a great man filled with admiration and respect for his father and his family and filled with understanding of life.
Please tell him I said so.
