It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Paul Jonathan Komiak, aged 64, on March 24, 2023 at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s, NL, after a lengthy illness.
Paul was predeceased by his father, Walter Komiak; mother, Josephine Middal Komiak; and brother, Wayne Komiak. Left to mourn are his loving wife, Sherrie Yi Komiak; and his two devoted sons, Adam and Jacob Komiak of whom he was so proud. Paul is also survived by his brother, James Komiak and nephew, Zachary Komiak, both of Marrimack, New Hampshire, USA; his parents-in-law, Zhidong Xiao and Longmei Chen, and his brother-in-law, Xing Xiao and family, of Changsha city, China.
Paul was born and grew up in Chicago, USA. On a golf scholarship, he earned his undergraduate and MBA degrees from the University of Chicago. Later, he completed a PhD from A&M International University. After working in private businesses in the US for several years, he joined the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2008, where he taught and did research in Finance.
Paul was a much-loved husband and father and will be sorely missed. He met Sherrie in May 2002 and they married on May 17, 2003, in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Paul came to St. John’s in 2003. Paul and Sherrie enjoyed many happy times together raising their two precious sons and traveling around the world. A dear husband and a caring father, we will always love Paul and cherish his memory.
The family thanks the many doctors and nurses who cared for Paul over the past 12 years as he battled the liver disease.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at 11 a.m., at St. John’s Chinese Christian Church (30 Newtown Road, St. John’s, NL) with Elder Wei Qui officiating. Flowers gratefully accepted. Donations in Paul’s memory may be made to Health Care Foundation.
