Obituary

Passed peacefully away at the L.A. Miller Centre, on Friday, February 18th, after a brief illness, Phyllis Jean Kirby, age 83.

Predeceased by her parents Mary (Mollie) and John Kirby; sisters Doris and Shirley; brothers Gordon and Fraser.

Phyllis’s career spanned close to 40 years with Newfoundland Broadcasting Company (CJON/NTV) before her retirement.

Leaving to mourn her special caring sister-in-law Sadie Kirby (Fraser) and their sons Keith (Roxanne), his children Benjamin and Shawn; Douglas (Kathleen) and Robert (Lisa) and their children Jacob and Claire.

Phyllis’s world revolved around her family, especially her 3 nephews, 3 great nephews and a great niece. Aunt Phyllis will be sadly missed by all. She wasn’t your traditional Aunt, she was an Extraordinary Aunt.

Special thanks to the responding Eastern Health Paramedics, the attending Emergency Room medical team, the doctors, nurses and staff on 4NA at HSC. Also, 3rd floor (Palliative Care Unit) doctors, nurses and staff at the L.A. Miller Centre.

At Phyllis’s request and Covid restrictions, there will be no formal funeral or visitation. A special family graveside service will take place at the Anglican Cemetery on Forest Rd.

No flowers by request with donations to the charity of one’s choice.

Sadie& Kirby family. Really sorry to hear of Phylis’s recent illness and passing.. Our families have been life long friends from Quidi Vidi Road. Of course Phylis and I worked together for many years at CJON/NTV. It was always a pleasure to stay caught up with our families..our thoughts and prayers go with you at this terrible time. Now that Phylis has completed her incredible life’s journey, may she truly return in peace. Ted&Gerri Gardner.

When I worked with NTV, we enjoyed many chats together. She always spoke of her family, and would beam with pride and love. My deepest sympathies to you during this sad time.

I was saddened to read of Phyllis’s death. I have memories of her in the choir and around St. Thomas’ Church going back to the days when we first moved to Newfoundland and Dad became Rector of St. Thomas’ and through the years since. I even remember where she sat in the choir. My sincerest condolences to you all.

My condolences on the passing of Phyllis. I worked with her for many years at NTV. Phyllis loved her family very much and when Ben was born her life, seemed fulfilled.
Phyllis was a kind soul, she is now with her loved ones.

Sadie and family, so sorry For your loss. I have fond memories of Phyllis and the Kirby family from way back when my sister and I rented a room on Newtown Rd. Phyllis was so kind to give me a ride back and forth to work for months, she certainly was a beautiful person and will be missed but the wonderful memories will be with you forever.. God Bless.

I worked with Phyllis for many years at CJON Radio and TV on Buckmasters Circle. She always had a smile and was always helpful to new employees. RIP Phyllis.

To the Kirby family, sorry to hear of Phylises passing, I have fond memories of her when we both worked at Hickman Motors on Water St in the early fifties, probably her first job after finishing school. I always remember her as been a really nice lady.

My sincere condolences to to all the family. I first met Phyllis in 1982 when I went to work with Newfoundland Broadcasting Co., Phyllis trained me in traffic for OZ FM. She missed her calling she would have made a fantastic teacher, her ability to teach, patience and kind personality just made her super to me. I really enjoyed working with Phyllis and listening to the stories about her family, she certainly loved all of you dearly. RIP my friend.
