It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, Phyllis Joan James, nee Brown, at the age of 76 on April 18, 2024 after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer’s/dementia. Phyllis was born on June 21, 1947 to Frederick and Shirley Brown in Gander, NL.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Jonathan Mahoney), her son Michael (Janet) her eldest son Douglas (Cynthia), nine grandchildren, who she adored dearly, Alexandria Harvey (Mackenzie), Jackson, Dylan, and Kathryn Mahoney, Evan, Halle, Karly, Jack, and Ella James, and her nine sisters and brothers, Carl (Gloria) Brown, Roy (Hazel) Brown, Gloria (Pierre) Belec, Marlene (Gilles) Paré, Darryl (Paulette) Brown, Glenn (Bernice) Brown, Ron (Jenny) Brown, Barry (Sharon) Brown, and Derek (Rosemary) Brown, and her special friend Cliff Head, as well as many nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David James, her parents, Fred and Shirley Brown and her parents-in-law, John (Jack) and Elizabeth James.

Phyllis had a meaningful career with Bell Aliant. Upon retirement, she took great pride in spending time with her grandchildren.  Phyllis loved to travel, and she always looked forward to her many trips with “the girls”, Cliff, or her family.  Phyllis was always there for her three children, Doug, Mike, and Sharon.  After losing her husband, Dave at a young age, she took on the role of dual parent and she never missed a beat.  Phyllis will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at Chancellor Park for the care provided to Phyllis over the past year, as well as Lanes Retirement Living.  She was always loved.

Cremation has taken place.  Family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, April 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  A Celebration of Life will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, April 22 at 1 p.m.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Phyllis’ life. The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

Flowers graciously accepted or donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of NL in Phyllis’ honour.

My sincere condolences to the Brown and James families. Phyllis lived life so well. I remember my chats in recent years looking back on growing up in YQX and being so blessed to do so. I recall meeting Sharon during my time at the refinery. Thoughts are with you all.

My sincere condolences to the James family. Phyllis was a part of my work family at Bell Aliant for many years. I have so many fond memories and we shared a good few laughs together! Although I have not seen her in many years, I would say my strongest memory if Phyllis is the pride she had for her children. She was a great colleague and wonderful human. May you rest in peace ❤️.

My sincere condolences to Phyllis’s family. I worked with Your Mom at Aliant for many years. Such a beautiful lady.

I am profoundly saddened with a the loss of my wonderful friend Phyllis. We first met in the early 1980s when we were both involved with the Virginia Park Brownies. We lived in the same neighborhood and so we quickly developed a close friendship that has lasted through the years. As our children grew older we were able to go on many vacations and Caribbean cruises together. I have so many wonderful memories of our many adventures and shared experiences. I feel so privileged to have had such a wonderful person as my best friend. I will forever miss her.

Marlene- & The Brown/James Families:
Please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of your precious loved one..
Although words are so inadequate at this time, just know we are thinking of you all and wishing everybody “peace of mind” in the coming days.
Phyllis was a wonderful person, and you all have your special memories which will help carry you through .
Again, please accept our deepest sympathy and prayers!

One of Mom’s best friends for life. Can’t believe we lost both of them within 3 weeks of each other. I know they are up there playing cards together.
