Ralph B. Best, aged 70, of Merasheen Island, Placentia Bay, passed away peacefully at home on December 18th, surrounded by family, after a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Ralph stayed true to form right up until the end, reminiscing in his final moments about skidoo trips with Lloyd and the boys, driving the California coastline with Margaret, building the cabin in Tors Cove, countless family dinners and the many wonderful parties filled with music and friends.

Ralph was a proud Newfoundlander.  One of his favourite things to do was to take friends and family (and sometimes complete strangers!) out for a run on the boat so they could admire the splendor of the Atlantic Ocean and our dramatic coastline.  Just last year he completed a marine navigation course at the College that he had always wanted to do.  His first mate was his granddaughter Maren who started sailing lessons at age 7 and has developed the same love and respect for the water that he had.

It has been said that a man’s friendships are one of the best measures of his worth. If that is the case, then Ralph was rich indeed.  He had so many friendships, all of which he cherished.

Ralph loved his career in the insurance industry as a claims manager.  His knowledge and connections were unmatched. A highlight for him was his term as national president of the Claims Managers Association and the party he put together for them at the Newfoundland conference. Ralph continued to work right up until the end, attending mediations and settlement conferences just weeks before he passed, working on files in his hospital bed, not because he had to, but because he enjoyed it so much.

Most of all though, Ralph was a family man.  He was a devoted husband, father, brother and granda.  There is nothing Ralph would not do for his family.  He loved them with all his heart.

Left to mourn are: his loving wife Margaret (Walsh); his daughter Erin Best and her partner Trent Horne; his son Andrew Best, his wife Jenny Gear and their children Maren and Bridget Best; his sister Anita Best and daughter Kate Power; his brother Brian Best (Diane Flynn); his sister Gladys Stacey and family; sister-in-law Cathy Best and her children Tim Best (Ralph’s godson) and Sarah Best (Brad Smart); also, the Walsh Family, in particular Elizabeth Walsh and her sons and daughters who were like brothers and sisters to Ralph.

Ralph was predeceased by: his father George Frederick Best, his mother Elsie Genevia Best (Reid), his best friend and brother Lloyd Best, his father-in-law Martin Walsh, and his sister-in-law Lucy Costello (Walsh).

Ralph’s family and especially Margaret wish to thank all the healthcare professionals who helped Ralph along his journey.  We were grateful for them every day. Each and every one, without exception, gave him phenomenal care and exhibited tremendous compassion.

Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday, December 20th from 6-9pm and Monday, December 21st from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Due to Covid, the funeral service will be limited to immediate family, but it will be live-streamed on the Carnell’s website at 1pm on Tuesday, December 22nd.

When Ralph was diagnosed with cancer everyone showed up to share their support. Instead of being sad, Ralph expressed his gratitude to us all.  He said he was lucky in life, lucky in family and lucky in friends. We were all lucky to have him.  Ralph always celebrated life and would want us to celebrate his.  May your next rum and coke be a toast to Ralph!

If you wish to send something, in lieu of flowers please send donations to the Tors Cove Cemetery Committee, Tors Cove, A0A 4A0 (e-transfer to hrokeefe@nf.sympatico.ca) or the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.  To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com.

To Margaret and Family
My first memory of Ralph was at an Insurance Adjusters meeting in Corner Brook many years ago. My first impression was that this was a man well worth listing to. Threw the years and after many work related dealings with Ralph my impression never changed. It was in the later years after the fishing and snowmobiling trips started that I really got to know Ralph . It was on these trips that I found out how talented, genuine , and all round great person and friend he could be. We have lost a great person. Zona and I hope that knowing the love and respect we had for Ralph will in some small way bring peace and comfort to you and your family at this sad time.

Margaret, Erin and Andrew and all family members….Irene and I share your loss and your sorrow. So sorry to Andrew And Jenny and their children on the death of your Dad .From. Your Irish Friends. Phyllis Fennin And Family

i truly believe you could write pages and not capture all of the beautiful essence that was Ralph Best. I came to know Ralph over 40 years ago and can say with certainty that he was truly “one of a kind”, irreplaceable” and “unforgettable.”. His smile was genuine and infectious and you never had to second guess how welcome you were, whether it be at their Limerick Place home or his beautiful summer home on Tors Cove Pond.. If you showed up for a visit and he was on the pond, rest assured you’d be taken out for a boat ride. He loved life, he was true to his friends, he absolutely loved music and always shared his talent with you. He was proud of his family roots, he went back to South East Bight often,. But of everything that he loved, and he loved everything with a passion, nothing was as important to him as his family. That was what I admired the most, and the love for his family, the family he and Margaret created and shared together, as well as his Best family, and the Walsh family he inherited,, all of you he loved so dearly,. I came to love Ralph and was particularly struck by his kindness to my Dad, and as I told Ralph myself not too long ago, I truly believe my dad loved him every bit as much as he loved me. I will keep his memory close to my heart always, as he had such an impact on my life and on the lives of my children. They adore their Uncle Ralph and Aunt Margaret, and I feel they are truly blessed for having received all their love and kindness.. Erin and Andrew, nobody has to tell you how proud your dad was of you,. And you’ve grown into such beautiful adults, that Ralph Best will live on for many years to come, from the many family values he taught you and showed you every day. Margaret, yours was a true love story that was genuine and recognized by everyone. What a special gift! The world in general, and his beautiful Margaret, his children and grandchildren especially, will keep his values alive and share them with generations to come. You will now carry his beautiful kind, loving heart in your hearts and he will always be with you. I love you all, and am so saddened by your loss. Janice (XO)

Oh Margaret I feel such sadness for you but also happiness that you have had such great love and wonderful memories which I hope with time will help to ease the pain you are feeling. I send solace and a warm embrace to you all as Ralph goes on ahead. He was a wonderful man in all ways! Cannot think of anyone who was not warmed and welcomed by his hospitality or comforted by his hug. I will be watching and with you all on Tuesday, even if only virtually. Much love to all of you. xo

Margaret, Erin, Andrew and family.
It is with the heaviest of hearts that I heard of Ralph’s passing.. I was fortunate enough to have met Ralph when I was only a boy, on my fathers coat tails. Upon meeting Ralph, my very first impression was simply wow! Ralph had a commanding,, intelligent and no nonsense presence. One that immediately commanded respect and that other men would be immediately drawn to. I was certainly no exception. He certainly loved his work, he loved music and friends and he dearly loved his family.
I was blessed to have had the opportunity to call him a friend and lucky enough to have had many snowmobile and fishing trips with him and Lloyd. Memories I will cherish forever.
Please accept my families most sincere condolences on your immeasurable loss.

To Margaret and Family.
We were so sorry to read of Ralph’s passing. Our thoughts are with you all. Take care and hugs and squeezes to you. Xo

Our condolences on your loss. I was so sad to hear of Ralph’s passing. He was a consummate professional and always tough (despite his kind heart) but courteous in his business dealings. He was such a lovely man and he made everyone he encountered feel that the day was brighter and happier for having spoken with him..

Margaret, Erin, Andrew and family, we are so sad to hear of Ralph’s passing. I have many wonderful memories of Ralph, through his friendship with my parents.
He was always warm and welcoming when you entered the Best’s home. I particularly enjoyed the Christmas Eve gatherings filled with music and boisterous voices of the many people there!
I will always remember Ralph’s guidance and advice when I embarked on my Insurance career!
Hold on tight to the wonderful memories you have of him and allow them to comfort you in the days and years ahead.
Our Deepest condolences.
