Robert Lester George

Obituary

Robert Lester George was promoted to glory on August 30, 2023 at 89 years old, while surrounded by his loving family!

He parted this earth with prayers, hymns, and thanksgiving for a life of Godliness and a legacy that he left behind for others to follow in his footsteps, as he has followed in Christ’s.

As he closed his eyes to his family, he immediately opened them to look into the magnificent face of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!

Predeceased by his parents, Levi & Bertha George, his brother Reuben, and his step-mother Nelly.

Left to celebrate his life are – his wife of 63 years, Isabel (Vincent); daughters: Beverlee Lamswood (Harrison), Cheryl Edwards (Rick), Janice George, and Lynette Hattenhauer (Juergen); grandchildren: Robert, Jeremie & Joel Monette (Amy), Leah Hancock (Mark), Brandon Edwards and Emily Hattenhauer; great-grandchildren: Aravis & Fern Monette, Maeve Hancock; in-laws: Daphne & Bill Gaulton and Gail Vincent.

Sincere thanks and appreciation to Barbie & Sherwood Young, Judy Langer, Pastor Lynn Homan, and many friends, and members of First Baptist Church.  As well, thank you to the staff of the 4 South B floor of the Health Sciences Center for their love and tender care over the past month.

Robert (Bob) (Lester), was born to Levi & Bertha George in Harbour Grace.  He later moved to St. John’s where he met and married Isabel Vincent, the love of his life.  They enjoyed bringing up four daughters, so much so he has often been quoted as saying, “Every man should have four daughters!”.  Bob enjoyed serving his Lord and Saviour faithfully in the community and as a member of First Baptist Church for 52 years.  During these years he served as a Church Deacon for 45 years, Sunday School Bus Captain, Sunday School Teacher, and on many different Church Committees.  He especially enjoyed the Church Maintenance Committee, as he was an amazing handyman.  So much so, that he and his friend Eldred were awarded the name of Elbo Construction.  Both he and Isabel have been parents, friends and family to many, as the door to their home and heart was always open and the kettle was on the stove.  With a strong faith and love for God, he taught his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren many rich values while bouncing them on his knee.  He liked to be actively involved, taking every opportunity to encourage others, while sharing the gospel and giving hope for eternal life.  His heart, home, and life was filled with joy, wit, love, laughter, and a listening ear.  Whatever he is known as – Mr. George, Bob, Robert, Lester, Dad or Pap, he will always be known and remembered by love and faith!  Thank you, Robert Lester George!

Visitation will be at Carnell’s Funeral Home, Freshwater Rd., on Saturday September 2nd 7:00-9:00pm and Sunday September 3rd 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm.

Isabel, while it has been many years since we’ve been in touch, we are still saddened to hear of Bob (Lester’s) passing.
Ralph & Mabel Miller

To the George family.

Bob George was the real thing. Bob and his dear wife Isabel were the first genuine Christians I ever met outside of the Baptist Missionary and his family who led me to the Lord. I was 29 years years old when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and Bob and Isabel drove 500 miles from St. John’s to Corner Brook to visit me, a brand new Christian!. I was absolutely amazed way back then as a new born babe in Christ that two people would do that just to welcome me as a new Christian.
I remember when Bob and Isabel visited my tiny one bedroom apartment and could scarcely find a place to sit because I had 186 different plants growing throughout my apartment. Bob commented that the place was like a jungle!!
I remember Bob and Isabel were such loving and kind people and full of love for the Lord, His people and the lost. I was amazed and incredibly thankful at meeting Bob and Isabel all those years ago. They told me they would be praying for me.
37 years later when I was speaking to Isabel at Bob’s visitation at the funeral home, Isabel told me that every time Bob would pray for people that he would definitely pray for me by name. How faithful a man he was!
I cried. I’m still crying. I miss Bob.
In the years since I’ve met all his family members and they have all been a blessing to me in different ways and different times and it’s truly a privilege to know each and every one of them.
I know you all miss Bob very very much but if Bob George is not in Heaven waiting to see you again , then Heaven doesn’t exist. Such a Godly man , such a faithful and loving man, such a testimony for His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Thank you Bob for your example to all of us.
I love you in the Lord. May you rest with the Savior now, it’s our turn to be faithful in prayer one for another.

Sending my deepest condolences and love to you all, Isabel, Bev, Cheryl, Lynette, and Janice on the loss of your Dad and husband. He is at rest now and I’m sure in his glory with God . It was lovely to have met you all while he was in hospital . He was sweet man and will remain in everyone’s heart ♥️ forever . God Bless you all , I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers . Your friend Cheryl

Sending our sincerest condolences to the George family during this difficult time. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. We remember first meeting Mr. George some thirty years ago, his Love for the Lord and his strong leadership. He reminded us of our grandfather whom we never had the chance to know, as he was the same in stature and spirituality. Mr. George may have been a small man, but one with a Big heart for the Lord and was a Big pillar in our church family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

To all the family, condolences at this sad time. May memories, love and faith sustain you in the days and weeks ahead.

Bev,
My deepest sympathy for your loss. Your dad was a sweet, gentle man and I know he will be missed.

Deepest condolences from Halifax Nova Scotia

Thank you Uncle Lester for taking an interest in your nephew, providing experiences I would not have had. Cod and squid jigging out of Quidi Vidi, cutting firewood and the best part, a big mug-up in the woods. These memories are mine alone now, and I will carry them always.

Catching Caplin down in Middle Cove or berry picking he was always eager to have us join his family activities. But that was after all, our Uncle Lester.

Thinking of my Aunt Isabel, the cousins I grew up with next door and their growing Families, Joanne and I wish to convey our deepest sympathies.

Cheryl & Janice;; my sincere condolences on the passing of your Father. Rest In Peace Mr. George.

Beverlee………our sincere sympathy to you, Harrison and family. Sorry that we are out of town and unable to visit the funeral home or attend the funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Cheryl and Janice So sorry to hear of the death of your father My thoughts and prayers are with you

I have many fond memories of Mr. George. From church, camp, hikes and much more. He had a gentle kind spirit and was a great example to many. My condolences to the family and much love from afar!

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 ESV
Praying for you all, I know how hard this is But REJOICE in our hope in Christ, who give strength to help in time of need.
Much love and prayers. Vanessa Bonnell

Cheryl – my deepest condolences to you and your family.

I have such fond memories of when they came to Windsor and when I went to St John, they always made me feel like family

Cheryl I’m so sorry on the passing of your father.. My condolences to you and the family .

My deepest condolences to the George family. He did not have to pass away to be referred to as a good man, he was that while living. His and Mrs. George’s kindness will not be forgotten.

Dearest Isabel, Bev, Cheryl, Janice, Lynette and all extended family members,
I share your sadness… Bob was a wonderful husband, a loving dad, father in law, grandfather and great grandfather and friend to many.
He was a godly man and I had the privilege of talking with him about Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on more than one occasion… he loved to share the gospel of Jesus!!!
I know this is a difficult time for you all and I know your grief.
I also know you are resting in the knowledge that he is in heaven with Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
You will see him again when The Lord calls you home.
Love to you all
Judi Edwards

“George” is what I always called him. For a long while I thought that was his name. You will always be remembered with a smile on my face. ♥️ I loved you, and your dear wife as close friends that I always enjoyed a cuppa tea with. See ya later George.

A live well lived, working for and believing in his Lord and Master. May Mr. George rest in God’s loving arms. You have earned your rest Sir.

My condolences in the passing of your Dad, he was a very wonderful Christian man who loved his Lord. He will be greatly missed. Praying for all of you. May the good Lord give you the strength at this difficult time.
