Sonja Drodge (Nee Stone)

September 25, 1960 to February 6, 2024

Obituary

On February 6th, 2024, Sonja Drodge (nee Stone) died in hospital at the age of 63. Sonja had a warm and entertaining personality, making her the life of every party. Growing up, Sonja was an avid athlete, competing in both softball and broomball. She enjoyed travelling, baking, and of course, anything competitive. Whether it was making people laugh, or by baking for them, Sonja loved to make others happy; she was the kindest person, a bright light, and the world will be dimmer without her presence.

Survived by her husband Ronnie; sons Zachary (Amanda Avery and her daughter Morgan) and Matthew; siblings Dianne (Ed Langer), Beverley (Terry Wadman), Barbara (Dave Penton), Hubert, Kirby (Marie) and Debbie (Mark Kraitberg); Ronnie’s siblings Maxine (Lloyd Currie), Charlie (Cecily) and Chesley (Wendy); and many friends.  Predeceased by her parents Morley and Thelma Stone; sister Gloria; Ronnie’s siblings Rowena and Andy.

Sonja also leaves behind many friends from her career with the provincial government, particularly with the Sports Federation and the Fire Commissioner’s Office.  She also made many friends on and off the field and rink during her more than 20 years of competitive and recreational sports.

In keeping with Sonja’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Instead, she wished for a celebration of her life to occur in the summer at “The Church”, where family and friends could get together to pour one out for her.  In lieu of flowers, Sonja would want you to do something nice for someone else, as she would always say, “that’s my good deed for today”. Or if you wish, you can donate to a charity of your choice to help people in need.

Ron, Zach & Matt – we are thinking about Sone everyday and can only imagine what you are all going through. The best decision we ever made was to buy a house a 3 min walk from yours so Neil could be as close as possible to his “most awesome buddy”. We will miss the “watch out for the poles” warning when we left late on a Saturday evening.; We will miss that vibrant, laughing personality; We will miss our bestest friend. We love you.

My condolences to Sonja’s family. I remember lots of laughs with her in high school (she always helped me with algebra!). I was glad that we ran in to each other a couple of times during our time working with the provincial government. Her warm smile and twinkling eyes will never be forgotten by anyone lucky enough to have known her.

Cousin Sonja was such a fun loving, kind, friendly, outgoing, generous person. There are not enough to express the joy, fun and love she bought to everyone she touched. Rest easy Sonja we’ll see your laugh again one day in the future. You will be missed. Very very sincere condolences to Ronnie and all the Family.

The truest friend one could have ever had … with the purest heart! She made our life happier and we will miss her forever!

Ron, Zachary, Matthew, & the Stone & Drodge families
Please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of Sonja.
I have many fond memories of all the Stone sisters playing Softball in Clarenville. They were all very talented and a force to be reckoned with on the field but it was never about showboating – it was always about having fun and good sportsmanship. Sonja was a great athlete but she was also an amazing person – very friendly, funny and the life of any party. I am sure Gloria and the rest of her family are celebrating her arrival in heaven.
Rest in peace Sonja.

Ron, I’m so very sorry for your loss. Thinking of you and your sons at this difficult time. You have many years of wonderful memories to cherish.

My heart is breaking at the news of Sonja’s passing. My condolences to the family and all who knew her. I met Sonja through FES, first as a qualifying Fire Fighter with Goulds Volunteer FD, and once fully qualified, as a regional trainer, working closely with Sonja through FES. She was a the rough and tumble sort who would give it as good as she would get it, but always did it with a smile and a laugh. She was a friend to many, and I am very proud to have had the pleasure of being one of those who called her “my friend” as well. She will be missed.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I enjoyed our time working together at FES-NL (911 Implementation).

To Ronnie and family and the Stone family:
Please accept our sincerest condolences on Sonja’s passing. Sonja had so many fine qualities, not the least of which was her outstanding athleticism! Her agility, soft hands and batting/shooting accuracy in both softball and broomball were second to none.
Sonja was also an important part of a close and loving family who cherished her beyond measure. That must have provided her much comfort throughout her illness.
