“Come back. Even as a shadow, even as a dream.” —Euripides
Passed away in peace and in the loving arms of her two children, Sylvia Carew (Legge).
Predeceased by her beloved husband Campbell, she is also predeceased by brother, Albert Legge.
Leaving to honour her life and memory are her children Christopher and Andrea, adoring “Nano” to her grandchildren Sarah, Johnathan and Olivia, daughter-in-law Heidi, and son-in-law Paul. Sylvia also leaves behind legions of friends, treasured colleagues and staff of TLC Nursing & Homecare Services. If you spent any time with Sylvia, you knew you were in the presence of a soul whose intent was to care for others. Now among angels, she is likely putting them before herself, too.
Born in Cartyville, NL., to Percival Legge and Muriel Legge (Janes). Upon graduation from high school in Robinsons, NL she pursued her dream of becoming a nurse, graduating from the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1965. Sylvia began her career as a registered nurse in the General Hosp ICU and later joined the Cardiac Cath lab at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s were she remained for 35 years.
During her early hospital career she understood the growing care need outside its walls. In 1973, while still working fulltime at the hospital, she began a small private duty nursing homecare company: TLC Nursing & Homecare, a community service which she led until 2010 at which time her son, Christopher, took over her legacy. She remained the heartbeat of TLC, continuing to give support to Chris and the TLC staff till the end.
An active member of the General Hospital Social Club for decades, and a true entrepreneur of the caring kind, during her time with TLC she also founded Remote Medical Services, providing nurses and other clinical staff for the Hope Brook Gold mining site.
The very company she established decades before provided the most professional Tender Loving Care imaginable in her own time of need. Special thanks to TLC staff caring for Sylvia at home Lizbeth, Rachel, Debbie, Liz, Sepideh, Yohanna, Oyin, and Nina and many other TLC staff. To Hamerti, Renee and Norma who ensured Sylvia’s own care from the company was as she taught and expected, your love knew no bounds. To her son Chris and her beloved TLC Regional Supervisors across the Province: You all have and will continue to make Sylvia, your Lion Heart so very, very proud.
Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home Saturday & Sunday December 2-3, from 2-4pm & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Augustine Church Monday, December 4th at 11am officiated by Rev Edward Keeping. Internment will follow at a later date in Robinsons, NL, St. George’s Anglican Parish.
A reception hosted by the ACW at St. Augustine’s will immediately follow the service. Flowers graciously accepted and donations very welcomed in Sylvia’s name to the Canadian Diabetic Association, The Southwest Coast SPCA Stephenville, or the charity of your choice.
Pray God you can cope as you stand outside of this woman’s work (Kate Bush)

Andrea and Chris , I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother Sylvia. She was an amazing human, I credit Sylvia and also your late father Cam for giving me the tools in life to get where I am with my life. I know without their guidance and wisdom, life for me could have been much different. They always encouraged me to work hard and set attainable goals. They encouraged me to move west. I will forever cherish both Sylvia and Cam. ❤️
Chris, I am so saddened to hear about the passing of your wonderful mom. She was such a lovely person and am sure she was a wonderful nurse. She spoke so highly of our profession. She told me many stories about when she worked in the Cath lab. Oh the laughs we had and she used to have me in stitches. She was always so helpful when I called her looking for home care for our patients. She was so dedicated and so understood the patients needs. She will be missed!! RIP Sylvia. Chris, Andrea and family our very deepest sympathies to all of you. We were friends for a very long time plus business partner for many years and worked side by side in Cath lab. RIP my dear friend.. Always love you.
Andrea and Chris .
So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I always enjoyed working with your mom in the cath. Lab thru all those long days and busy nights .
She always managed to keep a smile on her face despite those long days . No matter what, she kept a great positive outlook . I am sadden to hear that “mudder “ has passed. Rest well Sylvia,.
To Chris and all of Sylvia’s family.
Sending you my deepest sympathy in your time of loss. I met Sylvia through her sister in law Daphne and could see her caring personality. When I needed care for my husband I received it from the company she created. Sylvia saw the great need for home care and did something about it.. Many families like mine are so thankful for that. A mother’s love is a blessing and your mother’s memories will be a blessing to you all
Sending you love and prayers at this time. Phyllis Beckett.

Andrea, Chris and family. All my love to you. Sylvia was special, she really was (both your parents) and she ‘adopted’ so many of us as her children’s friends. Her wit and good nature along with her practical nature and incredible nursing and business skills added to everything that made her, Sylvia. We all have so many memories to share…even now recalling when she rescued my fingers caught in a door jam when my mother couldn’t do it…oh my…she was yar. Love you, Sylvia.

Our deepest condolences to you. I always enjoyed seeing and chatting with Sylvia when she would come to Cartyville. She would often come to the house to see Mom and Dad. In many ways, her beauty and personality made her seem like a movie star to me, when I was a child.
As you said in her obituary, she personified care and kindness.
May you rest in peace sweet cousin.
