It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Victoria (Vicki) Dawe at the Palliative Care Unit in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, on April 8, 2022, at the age of 67. Predeceased by father Victor William Dawe, aunt Kay Roche, and aunt Lee Roche. Leaving to mourn, mother Ellen (Roche) Dawe; brother Christopher (Debbie) and their children, Alex (Alexandra Taylor-Dawe) and Emily (Mike Mutrey); brother David (Janice) and their children, Elizabeth (Luke O’Connor), Rebecca (Andy West), and Peter (Emily); aunt Lyn Roche, special aunt Shirley Rose, and her many wonderful friends in Toronto and Newfoundland.

Vicki grew up in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador. She graduated with a B.A. and B.Ed. from Memorial University of Newfoundland, a B.F.A. from University of Victoria, and a M.A. from University of Toronto. Then the permanent student became the teacher. She taught in Labrador City and at various schools around Toronto, including Northern Secondary School and Earl Haig Secondary School. She found her passion teaching Dramatic Arts. Students always meant the world to Vicki, and she was so proud of their accomplishments that she helped inspire.

She loved her family, and especially adored her nieces and nephews. Even though she lived far away, she always played a big part of their lives – many of the kids’ friends also called her “Aunt Vicki”. She loved when they visited her in Toronto; it was an excuse to bring them to Canada’s Wonderland. One of her birthday gifts when she turned 60 was to do the CN Tower Edge Walk.

As a friend once summarized, Vicki was a playwright, director, drama teacher, skydiver, and world traveler – who lived in a candy factory. She started skydiving at around the age of 50, and completed more than 750(!) jumps.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, on Tuesday April 12 at 2 – 4pm and 7 – 9pm. Celebration of her life will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Wednesday April 13th at 2pm.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in her memory may be made to a charitable organization of your choice. Special thanks to Dr. Fardy and the staff at the Palliative Care Unit. To send a Message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com.

Victoria was my drama and playwriting teacher at Northern Secondary from 2004-2008. She was my favorite teacher — she identified my love for writing even before I did and nurtured it and supported it and helped me understand it. In doing so, she changed the entire course of my life. She was the reason I became a writer, and the reason I am the person I am today. I am deeply grateful to have known her and I will remember her and love her forever. Thank you for everything, Victoria.

I’ve taken this long to write my condolences hoping to find the right words to express my grief and loss. There are no “right” words – only precious memories and tears. I’m so grateful I was able to say goodbye and to honoured to have spent time with Victoria and your family. Thank you.

Vicki was a teacher and friend who helped me in many ways. I always enjoyed her company during my time with the Pelican Players amateur theatre group she directed.

Hi there!

My name is Kevin Vidal and just wanted to send Victoria’s family my love. I had Victoria as my first drama teacher at Northern Secondary from 2005-2007. I had a very hard time in school, very sure most people thought i was a lost cause. I skipped most of my classes from grade 10-12 but drama was the only subject i seemed to be excited about. It was the only class I went to. Victoria was one of the first and only teachers during my time in high school that showed any kind of support/encouragement. She saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. She showed me another way of life. I’ve been able to sustain a career as an actor now for almost 10 years and Victoria was the spark and light that helped me find what I consider to be such a large part of who I am today. Victoria was there with me at the beginning of my journey and she will never be forgotten.

Victoria, thank you for all you have given to me and to so many other students. I will love you forever.

Kevin Vidal

My deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Ms. Dawe. I was one of her former students from Earl Haig Secondary School. In my final year of high school, Ms. Dawe had my sister and I choreograph for the musical play she wrote, called “The Oath”. It was such a memorable experience, and an honour to have a teacher see a creative spark in me and believe in me. I still continue to teach dance and choreograph, and am grateful for the time spent working on the Oath with Ms. Dawe. I will never forget it! I hope that Ms. Dawe is enjoying paradise now 🙂 Rest in Peace.

Victoria was the greatest teacher I ever had. She really believed in me when I struggled in school to barely pass my classes, and encouraged me greatly in my love of theatre. My heart goes out to her family at this time. Victoria will always remain in my heart, as I’m sure she will for so many of her students.

My my love goes out to the family and to the Earl Haig/Claude Watson Family of teachers and students.
Thank-You to Victoria to her dedication and talents in theatre and all the arts.

Such a vibrant person, loving life, family, friends and travel. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. My condolences to the Dawe family. May she rest in peace, and soar in the heavens as she did, when she skydived.

I met Victoria at Earl Haig, teaching Drama together. We become instant friends and shared moments of riotous laughter in the office. She came to stay with us several times when we were living outside the city and our children, very young at the time, referred to her as “The Woman Victoria”. The title stuck. I’m so very saddened by the news of her passing and wish I could share more laughter with her. She lived fully and we remember her fondly. Wishing all her family the most sincere condolences.

My sincere condolences to Victoria’s family. She was my high school drama teacher and I remember her fondly. She was a phenomenal mentor and teacher and I know she is kept very warmly in the hearts of her students.

Few people have had a greater impact on my love of theatre than Victoria Dawe. I was her student at Northern Secondary from 2002-2006 and spent hours with her in our black box classrooms. Vicki and I were roommates at TNL’s Summer Theatre School way back in 1980. We kept in touch over the years, and the last time I saw her was after a play she directed in Toronto. I am so sorry to hear of Vicki’s passing. We were great friends in our first few years of university at MUN. We lost contact with each other over the years but I always wondered where she was and how she was doing. She was a great person and we had so much fun together. I will never forget her. My deepest condolences to her family. I am out of the country so will not be able to visit at Carmelo’s.

To the Dawe family, sincere condolences on the passing of your daughter and sister., Vicki. May you be blessed with beautiful memories.

I remember laughing a lot with Victoria – truly a wonderful colleague and inspiring teacher. I am so sad to hear this news. My deepest condolences.

As one of Victoria’s former students, I’m greatly saddened to hear of her passing. She was my drama teacher at Northern Secondary School between 2004 and 2008, and was one of the cornerstones of the drama program there. Victoria invested so much time and passion into the classes and extracurricular productions at Northern, it’s hard to put into words how much I learned from her, things I’ve brought with me in my creative work as a musician and journalist. I feel lucky to have known her and gotten to learn from her.

My sincere condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time. Victoria will never be forgotten.

To all the Dawe Family and to Vicki’s many extended families (arts, education, sky and suba diving) – it’s hard to get my head around her passing and not being part of our little “Group of 7” from our days at Ascension. Friends for 49 years, she has created a big hole in my heart and in this world. Vicki was larger than life and we loved to hear of her latest travels and adventures when we all could gather together. I will miss her at those gatherings. Please accept my most sincere condolences.

So sorry to hear about Victoria’s passing. I will remember Victoria as someone who loved adventure and had a real passion for life and the arts. My sincere condolences to the family.
