Johnny, the 7th of 8 children, was born to Walter and Lillian (nee King) in New Bonaventure.  The family moved to Stephenville Crossing when he was a child. June of 1962, he met Hilda (nee Goosney) and married on December 10, 1962.  Between 1963-1972 they built their family of 5 children.  Johnny worked at Newfoundland Light and Power for 30 years before eventually moving to Truro, Nova Scotia.  After the sad passing of Hilda in 2009, Johnny moved back to Newfoundland, where he met his partner Freda, and spent the last 13 years between Corner Brook and Mount Pearl.  He loved to travel and visit his family but always happy to return home to Newfoundland.  He was a true cowboy at heart and wore his hat proudly.

On Monday, February 12, 2024 at the age of 87 years, Johnny, our loving father, passed away peacefully at home after a short but brave battle with cancer

Predeceased by Hilda, his loving wife of 47 years, parents Walter & Lillian Hodder, sisters Madeline Burry, Gladys Ingram, Marion Loftis, Beatrice Hodder, and brother Robert Hodder.

Leaving to mourn, his loving partner Freda Watton.  His children Rick (Sandi), Bill (Jeff), Sherri Meeks (Colin), Joann King (Jay) and John; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. His sister Elsie Hawkins, brother Richard Hodder and his large circle of family and friends.

Thank you to Freda’s daughter, Kim Kelly (John), sons Steven and Derek Watton, palliative care team, paramedics, doctors, and staff. A special thank you to Doctor Robert Farrell, and to all our family and friends who reached out during this difficult time.

Celebration of Life will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Johnny’s memory can be made to the Cancer Research Society.

To Sherry, Joanne, Rick, Bill, John & Freda, Uncle Dick and Aunt Odie, and all your families.
Please accept our most sincere codolences on the passing of a wonderful man.
Uncle John always had that big smile and a big hug whenever or wherever our paths crossed.
He was always so mild and easy-going.
He had a wonderful life, and I know how hard this is for you all right now. Be there for each other, and hold on to your precious memories. Those memories will soon bring joy and laughter, rather than tears.
We watched the celebration of Uncle John’s life online and it was a beautiful service.
Take care of each other, and love to you all.
