Wayne Roderick Sharpe, age 72, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024, at the Health Sciences Centre surrounded by family.

Wayne was born on February 22, 1952 in Stephenville to Ronald and Doris Sharpe. Wayne moved to St. John’s at a young age and eventually married his high school sweetheart, Heather. Wayne was an avid athlete playing mostly every sport including basketball, softball, baseball, tennis and hockey. When Wayne realized he couldn’t swim, his plans of becoming a physical education teacher changed, “steering” him in the direction of Insurance. He owned and operated Steers Insurance for almost 5 decades and was a key contributor and icon in the insurance industry. His honesty and generosity were something to be admired and he will be missed but never forgotten.

Predeceased by his mother and father, Ronald and Doris Sharpe. Parents in law Douglas and Jean Moore. Brother in laws Neil Murphy and Tony Stuckless.

Leaving to mourn his wife, Heather Sharpe (nee Moore); sons, Jeff (Devon) and Jason (Laura); granddaughters, Hillary and Natalie; grandsons Brett and Justin; sisters, Linda Stuckless, Pam Cahill (Randy); brother Kevin Sharpe (Terry); Siblings in law Garry Moore (Bev), Keith Moore (Linda), Scott Moore, Lisa Murphy, Ian Moore (Allison). As well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

We would like to thank Dr. Joe Lockyer and the respiratory therapists and all staff at HSC. Dr. Shawn Martin and Dr. Mercedes Penton who helped Wayne along the way. All the nurses in the HSC that cared for Wayne especially on 4SB.

A special thank you to Roz and Doug Grant and Lisa Murphy for all the support to Heather and the family. Finally, we would like to extend our thanks to all the family, friends and colleagues, who have been there for Wayne and us over the years. It is difficult to put into words how much this meant, but just know that we appreciate and love you all so much.

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday May 26th from 2-4PM and 7-9PM.

A funeral will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, May 27th at 11AM.

Jeff,
I am very sorry to hear of the passing of your father and send to you and your mother and all your family my very sincere condolences. Losing a parent is a huge loss. I do hope that memories of happier days will be a source of comfort when you realize the wonderful legacy left to you by your father. I have not seen you since I taught you in Grade 6 but David has told me you are doing well. That’s wonderful. May God bless you as you go through this time of grief.

A Celebration of Life is a way to say goodbye to someone dear to you. Well, the funeral service today and reception at Heather’s residence after was a sincere goodbye that Wayne would have said was perfect. The best way to remember Wayne is with music and singing some of his favourite songs. Rev. William Mercer conducted a beautiful service and words of remembrance by Keith Howse was well done and spot on. Our sincere condolences to Heather, Jeff, Jason and their families. Wayne will be dearly missed.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Sharpe family and Heather, Jeff & Jason especially for your loss. My connection to Wayne is through my sister (in-law) Pam, who loved him deeply and as I got to know him over the years, I could easily see why. As a person, he was a very kind and quietly generous man who always made an effort to make me laugh whenever I was in his company. As a well respected businessman, I can speak from first hand experience when I share this memory. I was 10 yrs into my insurance career when I moved to BC in 1986. The Vancouver industry was thriving but difficult to enter if you weren’t locally known. During my first job interview, it was noted that my personal reference was from Wayne Sharpe, Steers Insurance, NL. It was clear from the smiles and grins around the table that the entire panel knew him and I was hired that very same day. His reputation was as solid and far reaching as the man himself. My reasons may be personal but I am confident when I say that anyone who crossed paths with Wayne will remember him fondly always.

Heather , Jason and Jeff, we felt so sad hearing of Wayne’s passing. We have reflected many times on how much you cared for his well being. He is at rest now. May God bless you all. We are thinking of you. See you on your walks. Love Wayne and Marie.

Heather, Jeff and Jason
Our sincere condolences on the passing of your husband and father.

Paul and Susan Hiscock

Heather, Jeff, Jason and families,
we wish to extend our sincere condolences at this difficult time. Wayne will forever be in our memories as a friend and a family man. God bless you all.

Years ago I had the pleasure of being seated at a dinner table with Wayne and Heather. With some prompting Wayne shared a brief overview of his life, including how when he was growing up he noticed that some of his friends always had pop in their homes to drink and vowing to himself that one day he would be so successful he too would have pop always in his house. Eventually, as he told it, he not only had a good supply of soft drinks but a fridge in his garage to hold it! I was always struck by how this man, by many measures living a successful life, could so humbly share this story of his modest expectation. And I came to realize that that was how Wayne lived his life; modest, generous, kind and thoughtful. His legacy lives on not only through Heather, Jason and Jeff and their children but also in the many people who’s lives he so inspired and touched. It was an honour and a pleasure to have done business with him. He shall be missed.

I would like to send my deepest sympathies to the Sharpe Family. . My path crossed with both Wayne and Heather through several years of hockey where Jeff and Jason played with my son Nicholas Dunn.

My thoughts are with you all.

We would like to pass along our condolences to the Sharpe family. We knew Wayne from hockey days when our son Wally played hockey. Condolences to all.

Though I Did not know Wayne well our paths did cross over the years firstly in Circle competition in basketball and in later years dealing with insurance issues .
I knew of his illness and kept a breast of how he was doing in discussions with Ron power Or Doug Grant.
I know he fought a good fight as he would and did through his life. He left us with many people highly respecting him as an individual and a businessman. I know he will be deeply missed by his wife and family, but he has left a beautiful legacy.

Heather, Jeff, Jason, and family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Wayne (Hurler), was such a great man. It shows in the two great boys you both raised. Cherish the memories.

Wayne Sharpe……an icon…..a self made business man…,an athlete…..a dedicated husband and father…..a family man….a loyal friend….,all that makes him sound serious and quiet, reserved….. for all of us who knew him he was anything but that…. There are so many stories about Hurler we could all tell if time and space allowed…. But for now let me say that he made us laugh convulsively in so many different places, situations and on so many different occasions. It didn’t matter – once Hurler was on a roll there was no stopping him. I was telling stories about him soon after I heard yesterday. Even at peace he can still make us laugh. My deepest sympathies to Heather, the boys and all the family.. RIP my friend.
