It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Spurrell on November 22, 2023, at the age of 81 years.  Bill died peacefully at the Health Science Complex after suffering from the effects of a progressive and aggressive cancer.

Bill is predeceased by his son Billy and leaves to mourn Florence (Noseworthy), his wife of 60 years, his daughter Diane, son-in-law Patrick Gushue, and his two beautiful granddaughters, Victoria and Angela.

Bill will be fondly remembered by a wide circle of family and friends.

Bill was born on February 12, 1942, in Valleyfield, Bonavista Bay to William and Eleanor Spurrell.  Bill was brother of Clyde (Rose), Ron, Patsy (Herb), Tony (Eleanor), Ralph (Cheryl), Betty (Bob), Jerry and Beverly (Craig).  Through his marriage to Florence, he was son-in-law to Andrew and Daphne Noseworthy and brother-in-law to Joyce (Bernie), Robert (Barb), Doreen (Dave) and David (Olive).

Bill was known for his work in the marine and fishing industries, and it was widely understood that there was nothing he couldn’t do if it involved ropes and netting.  For many years, his craftmanship went beyond the fishing industry.  Wherever a net was required, such as at golf courses and soft ball fields, his handiwork was on display. Likewise, if there was anything that needed to be done, Bill could be counted on to answer the call and lend a hand:  his generous spirit will be missed.

Very saddened to hear of Mr. Spurrell’s passing after a long and difficult illness.

I was his son’s roommate in Toronto and when he passed, I became well acquainted with his family during and following the funeral proceedings. Mr. and Mrs. Spurrell are very lovely people who always treated me well and I remember them both fondly.

I hope that it is of some consolation to the family that Mr. Spurrell is being mourned by his many friends in Newfoundland and those living abroad like myself.

My deepest condolences during this most difficult time.

Dear Florence,
I know that Norm attended yesterday’s visitation and could not be there for Bill’s funeral today for the reasons he explained, but I’ve just participated in the livestream from out here at the cabin. It was a wonderfully consoling service. I’m thinking about you as you proceed through this difficult day surrounded by the love of your family and friends.
You and I have known each other for almost a lifetime, it seems. I always knew you were married to Bill Spurrell and sometimes wondered how, knowing you so fondly from our school days and beyond, it was possible in such a small city that I had never met your husband. I didn’t realize I had actually met Bill himself until seeing his picture on the website.
Now I do remember him and i know his kind presence will be missed by many.
May you find consolation in your lovely daughters and grand-daughters and may you experience the profound mystery of faith in knowing that your family circle continues to enclose all who are dear to you.
Sincerely, Linda

My tears are with you today. We were neighbors and friends for over 20 years. If I close my eyes I can vividly see Mr.Spurrell at his nets in the garden, all the dogs he had, all named Sam and that one year he dressed up as Santa going up and down Quebec St. I remember telling him I thought he was Elvis. Boy, did he laugh.. My prayers are with you all. Me.Spurrell, a heartfelt ” Thank you” for all the childhood memories . Please give Billy, Mom and Dad a hug for me. Rest well. ❤️
