William Kenneth (Ken) L. Coffey

June 17, 1953 to December 29, 2019

Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved William Kenneth “Ken” Lawrence Coffey, age 66 years. Ken was born at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, St. John’s on June 17th, 1953 – and passed peacefully on December 29th, 2019 at the Intensive Care Unit of the same Hospital.

Ken was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and a passionate teacher and mentor who inspired and touched the lives of thousands during his 30-year career at Gonzaga High School.  Leaving to mourn his cherished wife of 44 years – the love of his life and best friend – Carole Anne (Walters), and their treasured children James, Joseph (Sue Anne), Jeffrey (Susan) and Juliana – who were the pride and joy of his life.  He was further blessed with eight precious grandchildren Lauryn, Gavin, Brandon, Carly, Jacob, Benjamin, Matthew and Nadia; two special brothers Michael Gray (Joyce) and Kerry (Sharon); six nephews Ian, Christopher, Scott, Andrew, Tyrone and John; a beloved goddaughter Sarah Loder (Green) and countless cousins, lifelong friends and close colleagues.  Ken was predeceased by his parents James Michael Coffey of Angels Cove and Marguerite Josephine (Maher) of Aquaforte/Ferryland, whom he loved dearly, and sister Roseanne who died in infancy.

A naturally talented athlete, academic and gifted teacher, Ken graduated as the Valedictorian and Athlete of the Year for the class of 1970 at Gonzaga High School, where he returned in 1975 to begin his lifelong teaching career.  Following his retirement in 2005, Ken furthered his career in science education as the Executive Director of the Newfoundland Science Centre and as the Director of Biotechnology for Sanofi-Aventis at Memorial University’s GENESIS Group.

Ken remained humble throughout his life, always assisting others without expectation of recognition or gratitude.  He was kind to the betrodden, generous to the less fortunate, a loyal friend to all animals, and spent his life trying to better the lives of others.  Ken lived by the motto – “A man for others” – a philosophy instilled in him through his immersion in the Jesuit culture at Gonzaga High School.  In accordance with Ken’s character, the family requests that flowers and other items be withheld, and instead donations be made to The Gathering Place, or simply to pay it forward to an individual in need.

Special thank you to the staff at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital Intensive Care Unit for their care and compassion towards Ken and family in his final days, and to the many physicians, nurses, and specialists in Eastern Health who have attended to him over the years.

Ken was a faithful Christian, a scientist and always maintained his sense of wonder.  When questioned or challenged on his beliefs, he always affirmed that “We are all made of stardust”.  Please join us in celebrating his life with visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Thursday January 2nd, and Friday January 3rd from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 pm with funeral service to be held at St. Pius X, Smithville Crescent, St. John’s on Saturday January 4th at 9:30 am.

Very belated condolences to the Coffey family. Ken was a gentle, funny guy, and I have always fondly remembered his work with Mike Best on Macbeth.

I was really sad to hear of Mr. Coffey’s passing. I always remember him as a patient and kind person with a brilliant sense of humour and a refined taste in music. I learned a lot from him. I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Carole Anne and Family, I was very saddened to learn yesterday of Ken’s passing. My sister sent me a message about your letter, Carole Anne. I have just read Ken’s obituary and the condolences. I shall also write a regular letter to you. I can imagine how your life has changed. For now, I send my deep condolences to all of you. Ken was an amazing man, and I wish that I had known him better. Alberta

So sorry to hear of this passing of an old friend. I knew Ken when his family spent summers in Ferryland when he and his brother were growing up. We shared some good times together at local dances and beach bonfires. Good memories of a great guy. May he rest in peace.

Very sorry to hear of Ken’s passing. A wonderful fellow and one of my favourite teachers. And I can see by the previous comments that I was hardly the only student impressed with his intellect and touched., and perhaps scarred (but no more than I deserved) by his wit.

Carole Anne and family. My thoughts are with you.

I remember Ken clearly from the 1976 Shakespeare production. He and Mike Best gave the cast and crew a beautiful experience . I loved his friendly style of teaching and knew when I saw his light blue sports car parked outside the library in the morning, that it would be a great day at Gonzaga.

Rest in peace.

Dear Carole Anne and family:
I was very sorry to hear of Ken’s passing and for not being able to visit with you to tell you so.
My condolences and very best wishes to you all.

Where to begin…
First of all GOODBYE , my dear dear Friend!! RIP and may God hold you in the Palm of His hand forever!! I have been wrestling with what to say since I received news of your passing.
There is nothing that can be said to take away the pain from the hearts of those of us who knew and loved you Ken. We have somehow stayed in touch over the past 52 years and between visits to Nfld and your surprise show ups at places where the Military posted us, we never lost touch!! You have always been a true friend!!
2019 is a year that I will surely not remember fondly.. first with the passing of my own mother followed by the passing of my mother-in-law just a month later and now the year end brings your untimely loss!!
To Carol Anne and the kids my deepest condolences for you loss!! You all know the kind of a man your husband, father, grandfather was and bear in mind that he will be loved by all who hold a lifetime of memories from knowing him!!

Always and Forever XOXO Jody

My deepest condolences to the Coffey Family. Mr Coffey was a wonderful person and an exceptional teacher. It is very rare to encounter a teacher who you remember more than 30 years after leaving school. He possessed a wonderful balance of intellect, humour and empathy that impacted all who had the privilege of being his pupil.

May Ken Rest In Peace in the arms of the angels

My husband just told me a story of Mr. Coffey. He and a friend went on the pip but submitted letters of absence the next day. They were called to the office by Mr. Coffey the next day and he had asked my husband how his friend spelled his last name. Unfortunately for my husband he spelled it wrong, he spelled it the same as it was on the absentee note.,with an extra L. They were both caught for going on the pip and writing absentee notes for each other. Sorry for your loss but he was remembered fondly. B Neary

Dear Carole Anne and family,
A colleague from the Geography Dept. called today with the sad message that Ken had died. From the outpouring of tributes to him he was fondly remembered by all who knew him.
With deepest sympathy, Mabel and Geoffrey Farmer.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Mr. Coffey was one of those teachers who were just wonderful to all his students. He was the only teacher who let me eat in class… and I know that sounds like a little thing, but it meant a lot to us that he wasn’t caught up in a power struggle and just cared about helping his students. Not only was he kind, he was extremely smart and wildly funny. I have no doubt he will be missed. Rest In Peace Mr. Coffey:)

My sincere condolences to Mr. Coffey’s family and many friends. He was an outstanding teacher that seemed to have figured out perfectly the delicate balance between getting the work done and sharing laughter as well. So well respected by all & will be very much missed and remembered with fondness.

Ken was everything to you and to many others. I know you will miss him dearly but take comfort in the good that he did in his short life. I would say a good life ended too early. He was my friend. We loved each other. He was also loved by Shelley who described him as a “beautiful man”. Please accept all our condolences.

Mr. Coffey was simply an amazing man. He will be missed and never forgotten.

My condolences to the Coffey family. I have many fond memories of Ken’s chemistry classes in the 3rd floor chem lab. He had an uncanny ability to make science fun and interesting.. Many times running into him, long after leaving Gonzaga, he always remembered my name. Special man and a special educator.

To Jay and Family,

Very sorry to hear the news. Ken was an amazing teacher who was loved by his students, fellow teachers, and staff. I always think Ken when reflecting on those great years I spent at Gonzaga. Condolences to his family.

I was in Ken’s grade 11 301 class with Nels Connolly as homeroom teacher 1969-1970. We played together on the extramural volleyball team with Mr. Corpus as coach who we “drove nuts” with our shenanigans. Ken always took the lead. He was a dedicated player when he got on the court. Always good for a laugh in class and got along with everybody. Saw Ken at MUN as we started MUN in Sept 1970. Always took time to chat about our Gonzaga days. A true loss. We are indeed stardust.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Coffey’s passing, He was a wonderful person and really enjoyed the times when we came to visit on our trips to St. Johns. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family.

To The Coffey Family,
A great man has gone from this physical world however, his legacy will live on forever. Such beautiful and cherished memories that has left an imprint on all who had the pleasure of knowing Kenny Coffey.
I heard about Kenny growing up as his dad and my grandfather were best friends. My brother Kerry was named after his brother.
Kenny taught my brother chemistry and my son Justin in Gonzaga. He was loved by all.
I first had the privilege of meeting Kenny when I took care of his mom when she was ill. We became instant friends and found out we were distant cousins. Kenny always wanted to learn more about his family tree.
During my son Justin’s illness with cancer Kenny was their for our family to always offer support and chat whenever needed. He genuinely made the time for all.
I feel so blessed to have known Kenny and Carol Anne and family you were blessed to have such a great husband and dad. He loved you all so much.
Kenny you maybe be gone but will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Kenny

Very sorry to hear about Mr. Coffey’s passing. He came to our 20th Gonzaga reunion in 2007, recognized me right away and asked how my brother was doing (whom he taught 5 years before me). Uncanny memory. He was also very funny. He once gave me an “SOC” for hitting a school bus with a snowball after school. I asked how he could give me a “sent out of class” when I wasn’t in class? He said “use it tomorrow”. My condolences to his family, he was a great teacher and human being..

Sorry to hear of Ken’s passing. Tony and I had great conversations with Ken. I Love the picture of Santa. One to be treasured for sure. He was a kind man and had a twinkle in his eye when he smiled.
Condolences to the Family. XO

Carole Ann and family, sorry to learn of Ken’s passing, I offer my condolences and prayers. Bless you all.

I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news of Mr. Coffey’s passing. I had him for homeroom my first year of High School (Grade 9 – Section 103). He was a great teacher and a kind caring individual who genuinely cared about his students. For me, he made the transition from Elementary School to High School easier and less stressful. The image of Mr. Coffee teaching class with his lab coat on is embedded in my memory forever. Deepest and Sincere Condolences to Mr. Coffey’s wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, friends, extended family, and former colleagues…May He Rest In Peace…!!

So sorry to hear of Mr. Coffey’s passing, he was a very special teacher. I was (still am) bad at chemistry but he found a way to make it seem engaging to my angsty teenage brain. His humor and wisdom will be missed by everyone who knew him, especially the multitude of students he helped throughout his career. My sincere condolences to the entire Coffey family.

Mr. Coffey was a wonderful teacher who made chemistry tangible and the process of learning it enjoyable. There were many days at MUN when I hoped he would appear as a guest lecturer! I can still hear The Mamas and Papas playing while wrestling through those quizzes in his classroom. Mr. Coffey always equipped students with the tools and environment to succeed and I suspect that there are hundreds of successful people contributing in the world today that owe a portion of that to him. Sleep well Mr. Coffey.

Mrs. Coffey, Joe, Jay, Jeff and Julianna.
There are very few words I can add to all the wonderful comments already made about Mr. Coffey. I’m sending you my most heartfelt condolences, and love. Thinking of you all, and remembering Mr. Coffey with a smile! Take care.

Dear Carole Ann and family, please accept our deepest condolences; you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Martha and Ches Sanger

My sincerest condolences to Mr. Coffeys family and friends at this heartbreaking time. Mr. Coffey taught me Chemistry in high school and was one of those teachers that left a lasting impression. I remember him having an incredible memory so much so that he would quietly bust people for skipping line in the cafeteria on a regular basis just by reviewing the line every few minutes or he would ask why you chose to sit in a different seat in his classroom than you did when he taught you the year before. I also remember him telling us about a crow that his kids had found injured and nursed it back to health and whom they kept as a pet. Secretly, I remember not really believing that this was true. About 10 years after graduating I remember running into Mr. Coffey at the vet clinic and to my disbelief, he was there with no other than a pet crow. I walked up to him and said, you know, none of us could ever believe that you really owned a pet crow, i can’t believe its true! He responded with that signature quiet wide grin that always seemed to have a hint of mischief; he was quite pleased to know he had surprised us all.

Take comfort in your memories and the family and friends who will surround you at this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you too.

Ken’s is the most appropriate and beautiful image ever chosen to introduce the tale of a life well lived thank you !

Dear Carole Ann and family, I was saddened to learn of Ken’s death this week and so happy to have had a chance for a few special moments to speak with you both a few times recently. Ken was always so pleasant and so interested in the lives of all he met over the years. There is no doubt he will be long remembered fondly by the many, many people he influenced and helped during his life time of love and generosity!
My deepest sympathy to you.

Carole Anne and Family: Our thoughts and prayers are with in
the loss of your husband and dad. Kenny has been friends of our family for many years. Our son Kerry and grandson Justin excelled in his chemistry class. My father Dave and his father James while growing up in Angel’s Cove were best friends. We always considered Kenny as a distant cousin. He was our guiding light during Justin’s illness. Kenny always took the time to chat through phone calls or random meet at the store always with a smile. He will be surely missed. Rest In Peace Kenny

So sorry and sad for all of you.. Joe, Jay, Jeff, Julie, Mrs Coffey and extended families. You accepted many of us into your world and for that we are very grateful. Jay said it very well.

You guys have a kindness that more people need.

Lots of love

My sincerest condolences to the entire Coffey family.
Thinking of you all during this very difficult tome.

My sincere condolences are extended to the Coffey family. Thinking of you all during this very difficult time.

I met Ken back in 1999 while on a one year teaching assignment at Gonzaga. I was the new kid on staff and when he learned I was a Southern Shore girl, like his mom, he immediately took me under his wing and always made a point to connect with me in some way each day, to show me the ropes, to welcome me in and to make me feel I could make a difference. I will never forget his kindness and mentorship.
Having transferred to Gonzaga since Ken’s retirement, I smile to hear Ken’s name pop up in conversation around our Gonzaga staff lunch table. His name is always said with a smile – quite often in the telling of some good-natured shenanigans. I may have only known him for a short while, but he left a lasting impression and obviously had a similar impact on those who knew him. Ken Coffey and Gonzaga go hand in hand.
Thinking of you all at this sad time.

Dear Carole Anne and family.

I was saddened to read of Ken’s passing. His kindness, humour, and the legacy of the joy of learning and of science carry on in so many whose lives he touched.. My condolences. Carolyn Emerson

The Montevecchi’s

Sincere condolences to Mrs. Coffey (Carole Anne), Jay, Joe, Jeff, Juliana and the Coffey family. I just heard this sad news. Mr. Coffey was one of the most respected teachers I had, and I truly appreciated his skill, kindness and humor in and out of the classroom. He was the first and only person I met that had the whole periodic table memorized! This intelligence and love of chemistry inspired my interest in the sciences and to pursue a career in Engineering. So, I hope these words help you heal as you remember what a great man Mr. Coffey was.

I find myself speechless to fully express how much Ken’s passing pains me. He was an inspiring teacher at Gonzaga but beyond that, a cherished mentor and friend since then. I thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to visiting with him (with our chats lasting for hours, at times) whenever I came home on a trip, and feel very lucky that I was able to move home a year and a half ago, allowing me to visit much more often during that time! I will miss those conversations, both for the intelligent topics as well as the insight into life and life’s problems.

My 2 older children, Seamus and Sophie, also met Ken in the last year and though their acquaintance with him was brief, he touched their lives enough that they were both very saddened by his passing, as well! Ken was that sort of person, to be able to talk to any person no matter their background, and to listen in a way that left no doubt that he was truly interested in knowing how you are and what is happening in your life. I feel that all of us who knew him were fortunate to have him in our lives and are so much the better for it.

Mr Coffey was one of my teachers at Gonzaga. He made science fun to learn and thought his student more then just science. He touched the lives of the people he came in contact with. He will be missed by so many. May you rest in peace.

Dear Carole Anne and family, Ken was truly a wonderful person. Have know him for many years. He has always been the same, kind, generous, sincere and humorous man. A joy to speak to., remembered so much of our growing up days. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Carole Anne Joe,Jay,Jeff and Juliana and families it is with great sadness that I offer our sincere condolences to all of you who loved him so dearly..He truly was a wonderful kind and brilliant man..He had the intelligence of his dear Father Jim
And the wonderful sense of hu mor of his kind and loving Mother Margareuite…Heaven has certainly gained another Angel.. May God rest his gentle soul…The memory of his love for all of you will guide you through this sad and difficult period in your life..God Bless you all.xoxo
Felix and Marian Barnable.

To the Coffey Family,
I am so saddened to hear of Ken’s passing . The words from Mr . Coffey’s obituary really says it all . Ken was an excellent teacher not only at Gonzaga but in how he lived his life. Ken would always ask me , “how are your parents and all your brothers doing or how is your son .” I really enjoyed having a chat with him . Mr . Coffey was a friend of mine and our family and he will be truly missed. To Mrs . Coffey and all of his family and friends I am keeping you in my prayers. Eternal rest grant unto him O’Lord and may perpetual light shine upon him .

Very sad to hear of Ken’s passing. My deepest condolences to Carol Anne and family. Ken was a colleague at Gonzaga and for several years we shared the same prep period. We had many interesting chats and talking about our families was top on the list.
As I am in BC for Christmas I’m unable to attend Ken’s wake and funeral but my prayers are with you.

Sincere condolences to Carole Anne, Jay, Joe, Jeff, Juliana and their enlarged family. I knew Ken during his teaching career at Gonzaga High School.; and remember him as a committed educator who would leave no stone unturned to reach out to his students. The many tributes contained on this site from former students is evidence of their respect for him as a teacher and a person.
After my daughter Susan married into the Coffey family, I got to meet and talk to him on a more regular basis.. He was a joy to converse with, on any topic one wanted to choose. He was a wealth of information who seemed to know most of the greater population of Nl. When the Farewells socialized with the Coffeys Ken was always conscious of including everybody into the conversation. He would always ask about my children, grandkids and even my great granddaughter whom he loved to see.
This is such a harsh time for your family. Over time I hope you can take consolation in your memories of Ken and also the impact he had on others.
On behalf of myself, my wife Lorna and the Farewell family we extend our deepest sympathies.

To Mr Coffey’s family – I was so saddened to hear this news. Mr Coffey taught me and was also my home room teacher in my last year at Gonzaga in 1991 and he made a tremendous impact on me and so many others in our time at Gonzaga. May your memories and the knowledge of the profound impact he made on so many others provide you with some comfort. You are in my thoughts and prayers – with deepest sympathies,

Sincerely,
Lynn Healey

Dear Joe and Jay and family: I’m so sorry to hear of fathers passing. I’m thinking if you all.

Mr. Coffey was a wonderful teacher, listener and overall amazing human. He will forever be remembered by many of his students. May his should rest in peace.

Ken was a great man and wonderful teacher. I had him for my homeroom class in 1990. It was my first year at Gonzaga and I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher you guide me through that transition. Also that year my parents had separated oh, so I was kind of finding myself that you’re so I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful teacher mentor just a listening ear when I need. I am glad to say that can with a part of my life and would definitely have it the same way if I had it to do over again. I am so sorry for your loss of Ken. He will be missed by many as well as myself. You are all in my thoughts and prayers, May the peace of Jesus be with all of you at this time

I was very sad to hear of Mr. Coffey’s passing. He taught me Chemistry at Gonzaga in 1987. Being that Math was never my friend, Chemistry also did not come easy. He always took the time to remind me what I needed to study to make sure the concepts were not lost on me and show me where I went wrong when I inevitably went off course. He was a wonderful teacher (amongst a school of great teachers) who cared for his class and didn’t shy away from lightening the mood with humour (his wit was as dry as it was sharp). While Chemistry was one of my least favorite subjects it was probably my favorite class. Passing that class was a testament to him as a teacher more so than it was to my abilities as a student. Rest in Peace, Sir……

Carol Anne and family. I was so shocked to hear of Ken’s passing. My heart goes out to you at this most difficult time.

Doloras, Peter and family

Ken was my chemistry teacher at Gonzaga from 1982-84. His passion and knowledge were obvious. However what I always remember was his effort to help those struggling with the course. He simply did not want to see a student fail. Extra time before and after class, additional group tutoring sessions, one on one tutoring….whatever it took, Ken put it forth. Rest in peace.

To the Coffey family,

Mr. Coffey was simply one of the nicest people I ever met in my time with Minor Soccer. It was especially nice to see his smiling face when I was refereeing. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope that the messages and condolences you receive will help you through this tough time..

Joe,, I was saddened to learn of your father’s passing, Sam and I wish to convey our condolences to you and your family. Although we never met your dad, I’m sure he was a wonderful father to have raised such a careing and outstanding son. Thinking of you at this trying time.

So sorry for your loss my friends. Ken was a great man, I’ll always remember his unique sense of humor. We are all thinking of you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ken taught me chemistry at Gonzaga in 2005. He was an excellent teacher and mentor. I always remember his dry sense if humor; he would put the class into fits of laughter and yet carry on as if nothing had occured.
I ran into him a few months ago at the Barber’s, he remembered my name, and where I sat in his class.
Gonzaga has truly lost a legend
condolences,

Carole Anne and Family,

Our deepest condolences to you. During my time at Gonzaga I deeply appreciated the care and concern Ken gave his students and his colleagues. And his mischievous wit … it was something to behold!!!
Know that we hold you in our hearts and prayers and in the deep assurance of Ken being in the arms of the Lord.

I was a student of Ken in the 70’s at Gonzaga High School. Very professional and caring soul. I moved from Newfoundland in 1980 and still remember this kind soul. May you be in the arms of Jesus my friend. Prayers for all your family.

I was welcomed onto the Gonzaga Staff in September 1993 by Ken. I have many great memories of working alongside Ken. He was a great mentor and on many occasions we had a great laugh together as he told of his many pranks with one of his buddies Paul Tobin (the Fallopian tube incident being one). I remember he was a GHS soccer coach and the “Reach for the top” (TV show) mentor to many! I learned so much from being a colleague in the science department along with him. Those were great years! Ken always asked about my family and he made a personal connection with everyone he met. Ken, you have left us all with great memories and have influenced so many young people to follow your lead to become “men and women for others”. My deepest condolences to your cherished wife and children.

Sorry for your loss our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at these difficult times god bless . Ken was a great teacher and a super fun person at Gonzaga he will be missed

Joe, Susy, Carly, Matthew and Brady,
We are so sorry to hear of Mr Coffey’s passing. Please know all our prayers are your family are this incredibly difficult time.

Mr. Coffey taught me at Gonzaga. I had recently moved and it was a difficult time. His quiet care and concern was a consolation to me. I was blessed to interact with him periodically after I left Gonzaga, and he always took the time to ask how I was doing and to share a moment with me. My prayers are with his family at this time.

Our condolences to the Coffey families on the passing of Mr. Coffey. May God Bless your Family at this time of loss.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Coffey’s passing, and grateful to have had him as a teacher. I will remember his kindness, generosity and humour, as well as his love of his family (whom he often talked about in class). To Mrs. Coffey and the entire Coffey family, praying for you at this difficult time. May he rest in peace

Gina and I extend our condolences to the Coffey family for their loss. Indeed, it is a great loss to many. Ken’s sense of humor and positive outlook on life is a lesson for all.
Ken’s great memory made him the historian among his friends and he could always recall in great detail events of long ago. He was, however, very discrete when it came to the more embarrassing memories. Ken, my friend, I shall miss you but I shall never forget you.
